ABSTRACT
Maintenance management systems have been operating in the European railway market for many years. However, the implementation of the new legal regulations makes the scope of the impact of structured system approach constantly developing. This new approach is the management of safety critical components (SCC), in which the main actors are rolling stock manufacturers and the certified entities in charge of maintenance (ECM). The aim of this article is to present how the legal changes affects the development of maintenance systems, both in the context of requirements and criteria used, as well in relation to of rolling out the certification process to all ECM, irrespectively of the types of vehicles. Furthermore, the article focuses on critical safety components and challenges faced by entities on the railway market. Therefore, the process of identifying SCC is described, including examples of components that most frequently appear on the list of safety critical components developed in the Polish railway market.
